New Advances in the Treatment of Chronic Pain

When we experience pain in any part of our bodies, it is usually an indication that something is wrong. The intensity of pain can range from mild and occasional to severe and constant. A sudden and sharp pain is called acute pain. It may either be mild that lasts for a short while, or may be severe that lasts for weeks or even months. Acute pain usually disappears as soon as the underlying cause of pain is treated or healed. However, when acute pain persists, it may lead to chronic pain. Even when an injury has healed, chronic pain continues to remain active for weeks, or months, even years. While some chronic pain may have been caused by an initial trauma or infection, some people may suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or illness.
For people suffering in pain problems, modern advances in medicine provide new methods for chronic pain relief. Over the years, chronic pain had been dismissed as something that is just “in the head”. However, modern technology has developed ways to understand how the sensation of pain occurs. It has gained greater understanding of how the nervous system, including the spinal cord, interacts with the brain to create such sensation of pain.
New insights into the brain’s neurotransmitter system have paved the way for new techniques in chronic pain relief. Recently, scientists have discovered ways how to maneuver those chemical messengers to change the way they interact with the brain.
This led to the use of antidepressants and other drugs as effective medication for chronic pain relief. Advances in MRI imaging have allowed researchers to clearly demonstrate how real the changes in the brain are. It exactly shows where the sensation of pain is occurring in the brain upon activation by a stimuli. The effects of pain on emotion can be seen, and vice versa.
According to Dr. Kwai-Tung Chan, a pain specialist and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, there’s a new understanding of a process called central sensitization. He said that if the initial pain from an injury is not adequately treated, those pain signals are sent repeatedly — which leads to changes in the central nervous system, making it more and more sensitive. Over time, even the gentlest touch can become very painful.
Pain specialists are banking on these new insights to prescribe new treatments that attack moderate-to-severe chronic pain from different angles: innovative drugs, targeted nerve-zapping procedures, and drug pumps that deliver strong painkillers to the nerve root. There is also a growing evidence that the use of psychotherapy, relaxation techniques and alternative methods can induce chronic pain relief through mind-body connection.
Research has done a great deal in developing new treatment options in pain management. And there are more advances in the offing. However, people should realize that there are medical doctors who specialize in pain management. Most often, patients consult medical experts when in the later stages of chronic pain when it is already quite difficult to treat. The earlier the condition is treated, the better chances for treatments to be effective.

The numbers of those choosing to pursue treatment from alternative medicine practitioners seem to be on the increase as disdain grows with the existing medical methods of treatment. This is especially apparent in the United States although the trend has crossed the pond and is now becoming evident within the UK. Why this trend has occurred is unclear, but an overall dissatisfaction with Western medicine seems to be the primary cause; another reason why this growth in alternative medicine has occurred in the UK could be the large waiting lists for treatments.

A recent survey revealed that almost a third of people have chosen to use alternative medicine treatments. The survey was conducted with over thirty thousand people and can be considered the largest ever survey of its type revealing the extent of non conventional treatment usage. The results generally gave the impression that the use of alternative medicine was increasing, in comparison to other studies the trend was plain to see across the board.

Out of the alternative treatments used, prayer was the most popular with almost forty three percent of adults following this course. Although this is not a bona fide treatment it does reveal that people are increasingly turning away from conventional medicine. Other treatments have become popular such as natural medicines which took nineteen percent of the survey. More spiritualist forms of treatment such as meditation have also seen a sharp increase in the past few years. Understandably in a world of pressure to stay in shape diets such as Atkins and Zone have also seen an increase in usage.

Of the bona fide alternative treatments used it is herbal and natural medicine that has become the most popular. These types of treatment have mainly been used to treat recurring ailments where conventional medicine has failed to solve the problem. These conditions are the hardest to treat conventionally and hence the public is increasingly turning to herbal treatments that give relief. Doctors are worried by this news however; patients are now making decisions on how to treat their ailments and turning away from proven techniques. The conventional techniques are proven to be safe and while alternative methods may work, longer studies into their benefits and side effects have not been undertaken extensively.

Another reason for the growth in use of alternative medicine is due to the high prices of drugs, especially those on prescription. It was thirteen percent of people who gave this reason for their avoidance of regular treatments. In many cases herbal treatments are in fact cheaper and although they may not be scientifically proven many are still choosing to take the alternative route. Once again, concerns over the safety of patients is the doctors’ major response claiming that even though these medicines are natural, it does not necessarily make them safe.

These downsides can be negated however, fundamental whenever choosing to use alternative medicine is to undertake research into the product and any side effects that may be apparent. In addition it is advisable to find a practitioner who is not only knowledgeable on all of their products but also trustworthy with the patients’ health as their major concern.

Overall the survey reveals the trend that alternative medicine is becoming an evermore popular option for patients. In addition to the cost of regular medicines and disdain with regular treatments, another fundamental reason is peoples’ fears that the extensive use of anti-biotics can lead to degeneration of the immune system. Whether these fears are founded is as yet unclear but regardless it is still helping the cause of non-conventional practitioners. Whatever the reasons for this increased popularity, seemingly it will continue as more people choose follow this course of action when it comes to medical treatment.

Chronic Knee Pain Relief – Could a Knee Brace Be the Answer?

How would you describe your knee pain problems?

Chronic knee pain can really infringe upon your lifestyle. Simple daily activities become a challenge as you attempt to avoid any type of movement that may aggravate the pain. At this point, chronic knee pain relief becomes a priority, and you just want to get back to living life the way you used to. The good news is, an affordable and low profile brace can help give you the chronic knee pain relief you seek. – No Joke.

The knee joint is one of the largest joints in the human body, and is used in just about ever activity we perform in our lower body. As time goes by, natural wear and tear can cause serious knee pain. Chronic knee discomfort can stem from any number of conditions. Unlike traumatic injuries to the joint (which can cause sharp but temporary knee pain), chronic conditions (such as arthritis, and bursitis) can cause pain that is steady and nearly constant.

Consequently, conventional treatments used for traumatic pain (such as ice therapy and rest) may not give you chronic pain relief in the long run. They can be helpful, of course, but many times they just do not “cut it”. It is always wise to have your chronic knee pain evaluated by a physician to help determine the cause. However, whatever the cause, in many cases, a well designed support may offer some degree of chronic knee pain relief. These braces do not have to be big, ugly, or heavy to be effective. Several different, yet effective knee brace styles exist these days…

Most chronic pain is related in some way to general wear and tear and overuse of the structures within the knee joint. For instance, when the cartilage disc under the knee cap breaks down and wears thin, the friction between the knee cap and the bone underneath can cause chronic knee pain. A brace, when properly used, can help relieve the stress on the joint, thus reducing the wear and tear and friction within the joint. Further, an effective support can help keep your leg in proper alignment, helping to provide chronic knee pain relief from conditions such as Patellofemoral Syndrome (where the patella does not sit properly within the femoral groove).

A knee brace can also help support the muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding the joint, helping to reduce inflammation caused by conditions such as bursitis, or meniscal tears. Reduced inflammation will help provide relief from chronic knee pain.

Braces come in several different styles offering varying degrees of support, depending upon your particular needs. Do not be left behind, just because your knee pain wants to keep you still. A support for your knee can be the one thing you did to help provide yourself with improved stability.

Cannabis Explained

Cannabis sativa L. is the scientific name given to the cannabis or hemp plant in 1753 by the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus. Since then, three main types have been identified:

Cannabis Sativa (Linnaéus 1753) or C. sativa L.
Cannabis Indica (Lamarck 1785) or C. indica Lam.
Cannabis Ruderalis (Janischevsky 1924) or C. ruderalis J.

Sativa, Indica and Ruderalis each have distinctive characteristics.

Sativa

Probably the most common form of Cannabis worldwide and also the type with the most applications. As a botanical name, sativa simply means ‘sown’ and is applied to the cultivated or common form of many agricultural crops.

A typical Sativa is a tall plant, generally a lighter shade of green than the other types. Its leaves are made up of long, narrow blades. Female flowers are longer and more ‘feathery’ in appearance than those of an Indica.

In general, the foliage of a Sativa is sparser than that of the other varieties Sativas grow taller than the other types, gaining height all through their growing and flowering phases. This is due to the equatorial origin of Sativas. In the tropical regions the length of day does not change very much between seasons, so Sativas are adapted to accomplish both their growing and flowering in a fairly uniform photoperiod.

The female flowers of Sativa strains usually grow along the length of the stem and branches, instead of forming in clusters around the internodes, as with the other types. This flower formation is due to the Sativa tendency to grow and flower simultaneously. As a result, female Sativa flowers are usually less dense and weigh less than Indica flowers.

A pure Sativa often requires a combined grow/flower period of around six months to ripen completely. For this reason there is no such thing as a pure indoor Sativa strain. All Sativa strains that are viable for indoor growing have been hybridised with Indica strains to make them more compact and faster to flower.

Nearly all cannabis grown for industrial purposes is Sativa. As the tallest variety it produces the longest fibres and therefore has the widest range of industrial uses.

Indica

Indica varieties are generally agreed to have originated on the Asian subcontinent or possibly Afghanistan. Lamarck, the first European botanist to classify this type, received his samples from India and thus dubbed the plant ‘Indica’ in recognition of that fact.

A typical Indica is a much more compact, thick-stemmed plant, usually attaining a height of less than two metres. It is a darker shade of green, some examples appearing to have almost blue or green-black foliage. Its leaves are comprised of short, wide blades. An Indica tends to produce more side-branches and denser foliage than a Sativa, resulting in a wider, bushier plant. Female Indica flowers form in thick clusters around the internodes of the plant and usually weigh more than Sativa flowers of similar size.

The life cycle of an Indica is divided into two distinct photoperiods – growing and flowering. Growing occurs when the plant is in an environment of long days and short nights. Here, the plant devotes its energy to increasing in size. As days become shorter and nights longer, the plant receives the signal that winter is approaching and flowering is triggered. Here, upward and outward growth slows or stops as the plant devotes its energy to growing reproductive parts.

An Indica requires both a growing and flowering period in order to reach its full size.

Many Indicas are a rich source of the cannabinoids THC, CBD and CBN. While a Sativa may possess a higher proportion of THC relative to its other cannabinoids, an Indica will often contain significant levels of all three. When ingested, Indicas tend to produce more bodily effects than Sativas – effects such as enhancement of physical sensations, relaxation, dry mouth, red eyes. These Indica effects are often grouped together under the term ‘stoned’, as opposed to the ‘high’ imparted by Sativas. This is not to say that Indicas have no psychoactive effect, just that they also have noticeable effects on the body.

Indicas are cultivated almost exclusively for their medicinal and psychoactive properties. Lamarck, when classifying this type, commented that Indica’s “firm stem and thin bark make it incapable of furnishing similar fibres to the preceding species (C. sativa L.) of which so much use is made.”

Ruderalis

The name ‘ruderalis’ comes from the German ruderal, a term for weeds growing by the roadside or on other fallow land.

Cannabis ruderalis is an uncultivated strain native to Russia and central Europe and is adapted to the harsher environments found in these locations. Whether seen as a variation on the single cannabis species or as a distinct species in itself, Ruderalis varieties are most likely descended from Indica varieties which, in turn, are probably descended from Sativas.

The differences between these three in their growing and reproductive patterns can be linked to the vastly different climates and environments encountered by the original tropical phenotype C. sativa L. as it colonised further and further north of the equator after the last ice age.

The most notable characteristic of the Ruderalis strain is its capacity to flower (and therefore reproduce) according to an individual plant’s age, independent of the photoperiod in which it is growing.

Since nearly all flowering plants take their cue to reproduce from the climatic factors indicative of season, the ability to begin this process based on changes in the plant rather than in its environment is known as ‘auto-flowering’.

A Ruderalis will begin flowering when it achieves a certain stage of maturity – normally after about seven weeks of growth, when it reaches its fifth to seventh internode. Once a Ruderalis has begun flowering, it continues to do so until other environmental factors (most notably winter) cause the plant to die. The other varieties may expire naturally once their reproduction has been accomplished, or may return to vegetative growth if given a long photoperiod.

Ruderalis’ adaptation to short, cool summers can be seen in other areas. Ruderalis has the ability to complete its life cycle – from being a seed to producing seeds – in just 10 weeks. Its seeds detach easily and can survive more than one season in frozen ground – until conditions are favourable enough to allow growth. The seeds can also survive their shells being cracked open when walked on by humans or animals. For some Ruderalis strains, this occurrence may even aid the germination of seeds.

A typical Ruderalis plant is very short in height, often between 10cm and 50cm at full maturity. It displays little or no branching and has wide, fat-bladed leaves, similar to those of an Indica. Once flowering begins, Ruderalis will gain even less height than an Indica.

Wild Ruderalis strains are nearly always high in CBD and low in THC.

While pure Ruderalis strains have little value in terms of fibre, medicine or psychoactivity, their auto-flowering capability and their extremely fast maturation time are of great interest to cannabis breeders. Hybrids made from combining Indica and Ruderalis strains are currently proving to be some of the earliest-maturing outdoor plants available.

Causes and Complications of Chronic Pain – How to Manage

More people call out sick from work because of chronic pain than call out sick because of the common cold. Chances are you or someone you know suffers from chronic pain. Pain is a necessary part of life. It alerts us when something is wrong with our bodies. It’s normal to experience pain with an illness or injury. Normally, this pain fades as the injury heals or the sickness goes away. This is referred to as acute pain.

Pain becomes chronic when it continues after the healing time of the injury. This pain can hang on for months or even years and often causes depression in its sufferers. Chronic pain can also occur as the result of an ongoing condition, like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or cancer. Back injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and migraine headaches are some other examples of conditions that cause chronic pain. Some pain can result from injury to the nerves causing them send false signals to the brain. How massage affects your pain is partly dependent on its source.

If your pain is caused by a muscle injury massage can not only help ease the pain but also help speed the healing process. Acute or chronic – these are the two words that describe pain. Acute goes away easily and rarely lasts long. Chronic is its exact opposite. Chronic pain can last for six months and is expected to recur at anytime. The main cause of it is very hard to pinpoint. And it doesn’t help if doctors were more interested in addressing the pains rather than knowing what is actually causing it. As such, chronic pain relief can be elusive to patients.

But then again, there are certain medicines and therapies that are deemed effective for chronic pain. There are also a lot of medicines sold over-the-counter, which can truly help. While chronic pain is a major problem, patients do have options to treat it. Doctors normally prescribe medicines, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants, to address chronic pain. Chronic pain relief is also possible with physical therapy. Physical therapy corresponds to the low-impact exercises like swimming, walking, and stretching. If done regularly, these simple exercises can help your body a lot. It can help lower the intensity of the pain you’re going through.

However, these exercises are best performed along a trained physical therapist. Both occupational and behavioral therapies could also help. In occupational therapy, patients are thought how to pace and condition themselves when doing everyday tasks. Don’t get discouraged if you are one of the chronic pain sufferers for which a cause cannot be found. An unknown source doesn’t make the pain any less real. Fibromyalgia, for example, causes widespread pain in muscles and joints.

Yet, a person with fibromyalgia may not know the cause of the pain A healthcare provider may be able to link fibromyalgia to an injury or virus; but in other cases, a specific cause may go unidentified. Irritable bowel syndrome is another example of chronic pain for which the specific cause may not be known. Chronic pain may be related to changes in your nerve signals after a healed injury. Chronic pain may also be related to heightened pain sensitivity when your body produces lower than normal levels of painkilling endorphins. If you suffer from chronic pain do not ignore the warning signals. If you try to tough it out, the disease, illness, or injury may get worse. Left untreated, chronic pain can also mentally wear you down. Making massage therapy part of your treatment routine could help ease your pain and lessen your dependence on pain killing drugs. In the long run this will lead to less drug side effects and better health.

About Arthritis Pain Relief

Chronic pain has plugged into thousands and millions of people in this fast developing world. There are number of cases found suffering from chronic pain conditions and takes a long period of time to recover. People tempt to get chronic pain relief through some natural ways. Around 50 to 80 millions of Americans are suffering form chronic pain condition. The chronic pain if treated at an earlier stage can be well treated but if it sustains for a longer period than the situation can become worse. Chronic pain relives the flow of harmful hormones, such as cortisol which plays a major role in adversely affecting the immune system and kidney function.

Chronic pain relief has now emerged with new and great techniques and treatments. The researchers and surgeons are now enhanced with effective drugs to implant and electrical stimulation. The birth of chronic pain can be due to various reasons like from an accident affecting much too sensitive veins and muscles, back injuries, an injury caused while playing sport, and chronic pain can also be occur from health conditions like migraines, diabetes, arthritis, shingles, and cancer. It is not important that a person will be suffering from chronic pain only; he may suffer from acute pain too. The acute pain causes are also the same as chronic pain but the difference lies as the acute pain easily and quickly subside after treatment. The foremost distinguish feature between acute pain and chronic pain is the duration of time. Chronic pain can be for a longer period of time and severe and unbearable. While acute pain subside the pain gradually and swiftly within a short period of time.

One should be smart enough to take precise care of his/her health in a pragmatic way. A patient can opt to treat in a natural or surgical way. Acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy or if any alternative therapy are some natural ways which can be best suited for your health. In acupuncture you just need to locate the pressure points to heal the body pain and feel relax and comfortable. Acupuncture is done by way of needles and acupressure is done by way of hands. This therapy gives the relaxation to our muscles helps to keep your mind calm. Even doing medication acts as assistance to cure your chronic back pain relief. Pain relief supplements can provide only temporary relief.

Thus, to deal with chronic pain relief you can even join a support group of patients suffering from same pain. You need to be habituated of taking healthy diet including some fruits and fresh juices which plays a vital role in curing the unbearable pain. A patient suffering from chronic pain needs to develop positive mental attitude to strengthen his/her mind.
